Mastering English Punctuation: A Friendly Guide from Teacher Terry

Struggling with commas or semicolons? Teacher Terry shares simple, friendly tips to help you master English punctuation and boost your writing confidence.

Why Punctuation Matters

Hi there! I am Teacher Terry. If there is one thing I hear from my students, it is that punctuation feels like an unnecessary hurdle. I like to think of punctuation as the 'traffic signals' of language; without them, the reader gets lost in a sea of words!

The Power of the Comma

The comma is arguably the most common culprit for confusion. Use them to separate items in a list, like: "I need a pen, a notebook, and my grammar guide." You can also use them to connect independent clauses when followed by a coordinating conjunction. For more deep dives into these rules, check out the resources at British Council.

  • Use commas for pauses: If you would read it with a slight breath, a comma might belong there.
  • Avoid the comma splice: Don't join two complete sentences with just a comma; use a semicolon instead!

Semicolons and Colons: The Fancy Tools

Many students avoid these, but they are great for adding sophistication to your writing. A semicolon joins two closely related sentences, while a colon introduces a list or an explanation. If you want to practice these in a structured environment, Book a lesson with me and we can work on your sentence variety together.

Stay Consistent

Whether you prefer British or American English, the most important rule is consistency. If you want to refine your formal writing skills for exams like IELTS, visit IELTS.org for official standards. Remember, even native speakers get these wrong sometimes!
