How to Master English Vocabulary: My Proven 5-Step Strategy
Struggling to remember new English words? I am Teacher Terry, and I share my 5-step strategy to help you master vocabulary and speak with confidence.
Why Vocabulary Stalls Often Happen
Hi there! I am Teacher Terry. If you feel like you are memorizing words but forgetting them the next day, you are not alone. Many students fall into the trap of just reading lists, which rarely leads to true retention. To truly master the language, we need to move from passive learning to active usage.
My 5-Step Vocabulary Strategy
I have developed a system that helps my students turn new words into long-term knowledge. Here is how I teach it:
1. Context is Queen
Never learn a word in isolation. If you see a new term, find a sentence where it is used. For example, instead of just noting 'resilient', learn it as 'The student was resilient despite the difficult exam'. Check out Cambridge Dictionary for excellent contextual examples.
2. The Power of Personalization
Connect the word to your own life. Write about a time you were 'resilient'. When the word is linked to a memory, it sticks much faster.
3. Use Spaced Repetition
Don't cram! Review your new words after 1 day, then 3 days, then a week. This tricks your brain into keeping the information.
4. Active Usage
Use the word in a sentence during our next session! If you want to practice, you can Book a lesson and we can work on integrating these words into your daily speaking.
5. Immersion
Listen to podcasts or read articles from the British Council to see these words in their natural habitat.
